Helena is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 10,296.

Geography Helena is located at 33°16'47" North, 86°51'22" West (33.279715, -86.856060)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.3 km² (17.1 mi²). 44.2 km² (17.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 10,296 people, 3,828 households, and 3,043 families residing in the city. The population density is 232.9/km² (603.0/mi²). There are 3,983 housing units at an average density of 90.1/km² (233.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.25% White, 5.00% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,828 households out of which 43.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.2% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.5% are non-families. 17.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 42.7% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $62,908, and the median income for a family is $66,250. Males have a median income of $45,291 versus $32,431 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,323. 2.2% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.2% are under the age of 18 and 0.0% are 65 or older.
