Heaving line bend

A quick and simple knot that is used to attach a light messenger, throwing line to the bight of a heavy hawser, enabling it to be hawled into positon.

Tying steps:

1. Form a bight by doubling the end of the hawser. 2. Lay the working end of the lighter line over the bight. 3. Lead the working end around the standing part of the bight from front to back, and bring it over its own standing part to complete one turn. 4. Lead the working end beneath the short end of the bight, bringing it around and tucking it into the turn. 5. Tighten the knot by pulling on the standing parts.

Tying tip:

Once tied, turn the knot over to prevent the hawser from catching on projections.
