Heard County, Georgia

Heard County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 11,012. The county's county seat is Franklin, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 780 km² (301 mi²). 767 km² (296 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,012 people, 4,043 households, and 3,040 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 4,512 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.48% White, 10.82% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,043 households out of which 37.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 12.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 21.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,038, and the median income for a family is $39,306. Males have a median income of $31,900 versus $22,492 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,132. 13.60% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.60% are under the age of 18 and 17.40% are 65 or older.
