Harwich Port, Massachusetts

Harwich Port is a town located in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,809.

Geography Harwich Port is located at 41°40'5" North, 70°4'9" West (41.668111, -70.069041)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 23.39% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,809 people, 1,000 households, and 485 families residing in the town. The population density is 265.6/km² (688.1/mi²). There are 2,279 housing units at an average density of 334.6/km² (866.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.73% White, 0.61% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,000 households out of which 10.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.4% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 51.4% are non-families. 46.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 29.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.79 and the average family size is 2.49.

In the town the population is spread out with 11.3% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 18.5% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 41.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 58 years. For every 100 females there are 74.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,583, and the median income for a family is $45,385. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $33,229 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,085. 14.6% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 44.1% are under the age of 18 and 6.7% are 65 or older.
