Hartwell is a city located in Hart County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,188. The city is the county seat of Hart County6.

Geography Hartwell is located at 34°21'10" North, 82°55'52" West (34.352738, -82.931161)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,188 people, 1,760 households, and 1,073 families residing in the city. The population density is 349.2/km² (904.9/mi²). There are 1,950 housing units at an average density of 162.6/km² (421.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.42% White, 34.86% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,760 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 36.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 78.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,411, and the median income for a family is $34,560. Males have a median income of $28,512 versus $24,107 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,745. 23.7% of the population and 16.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.4% are under the age of 18 and 26.1% are 65 or older.
