Hart County, Georgia

Hart County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 22,997. The county's county seat is Hartwell, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 664 km² (256 mi²). 601 km² (232 mi²) of it is land and 63 km² (24 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.44% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,997 people, 9,106 households, and 6,610 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (99/mi²). There are 11,111 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (48/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.09% White, 19.36% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,106 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,833, and the median income for a family is $39,600. Males have a median income of $30,652 versus $21,233 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,714. 14.80% of the population and 12.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.10% are under the age of 18 and 16.50% are 65 or older.
