Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,630 people, 2,856 households, and 2,281 families residing in the town. The population density is 404.1/km² (1,046.0/mi²). There are 2,956 housing units at an average density of 156.6/km² (405.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.59% White, 12.94% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,856 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.8% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 16.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
