Harlan, Kentucky

Harlan is a city located in Harlan County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,081. It is the county seat of Harlan County6.

Geography Harlan is located at 36°50'29" North, 83°19'12" West (36.841487, -83.320066)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,081 people, 926 households, and 550 families residing in the city. The population density is 459.1/km² (1,187.4/mi²). There are 1,060 housing units at an average density of 233.9/km² (604.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.01% White, 7.02% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 926 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 39.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $17,270, and the median income for a family is $29,135. Males have a median income of $37,500 versus $20,852 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,572. 32.4% of the population and 23.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.0% are under the age of 18 and 20.6% are 65 or older.
