Hanceville is a city located in Cullman County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 2,951.

Geography Hanceville is located at 34°3'48" North, 86°45'39" West (34.063463, -86.760908)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,951 people, 1,167 households, and 710 families residing in the city. The population density is 277.2/km² (718.6/mi²). There are 1,323 housing units at an average density of 124.3/km² (322.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.09% White, 4.61% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,167 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the city the population is spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 17.7% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,351, and the median income for a family is $35,370. Males have a median income of $31,439 versus $18,112 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,371. 21.9% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.9% are under the age of 18 and 13.5% are 65 or older.
