Hampton Township, Michigan

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 84.2 km² (32.5 mi²). 70.1 km² (27.0 mi²) of it is land and 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.82% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,902 people, 4,137 households, and 2,610 families residing in the township. The population density is 141.3/km² (366.0/mi²). There are 4,341 housing units at an average density of 62.0/km² (160.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.05% White, 1.33% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 2.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,137 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the township the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.
