Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,236 people, 4,877 households, and 3,092 families residing in the town. The population density is 392.4/km² (1,016.1/mi²). There are 6,875 housing units at an average density of 220.5/km² (570.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.95% White, 0.87% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 3.69% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. 12.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,877 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
