Haines Borough, Alaska

Haines Borough is a borough located in the U.S. State of Alaska. As of 2000 the population is 2,392. The borough seat is Haines. Haines is the only incorporated place.

Geography The borough has a total area of 7,060 km² (2,726 mi²). 6,070 km² (2,344 mi²) of it is land and 990 km² (382 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.02% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 2,392 people, 991 households, and 654 families residing in the borough. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 1,419 housing units at an average density of 0 persons/km² (1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 82.53% White, 0.13% African American, 11.50% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 4.64% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 991 households out of which 31.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 34.00% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the borough the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 30.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.10 males.
