Gudfred

King Godfrid (804)-810) was the younger son of King Sigfred. It seems is believed that his elder brother Halphdan became Earl of some rich marketplaces south of the river Eider and refusing to pay tax to Godfrid swore his faith to emperor Charles in 807 to get his support. Godfrid mobilized an army and occupied the defense line, Danevirke, from 737. Then he occupied one of the marketplaces, burnt it down and told the merchants to settle down at Sliestorp just outside Danevirke. In 810 Godfrid let a sea-borne army go plundering to the Frisian coast, but the same summer he was killed by a lifeguard i.e. a member of his hird. According to Notker he was murdered by one of his sons. This seems to be correct as the sons were borne members of the hird, and since the oldest son could not succeed as king.
