Gregory County, South Dakota

Gregory County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 4,792. Its county seat is Burke6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,728 km² (1,053 mi²). 2,631 km² (1,016 mi²) of it is land and 97 km² (38 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.56% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,792 people, 2,022 households, and 1,290 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 2,405 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.18% White, 0.04% African American, 5.59% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,022 households out of which 26.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.20% are non-families. 33.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 22.00% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 24.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.90 males.
