Greenup County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 36,891. Its county seat is Greenup6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 918 km² (355 mi²). 896 km² (346 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.37% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,891 people, 14,536 households, and 11,032 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km² (107/mi²). There are 15,977 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (46/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.07% White, 0.57% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,536 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.10% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,142, and the median income for a family is $38,928. Males have a median income of $35,475 versus $21,198 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,137. 14.10% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.60% are under the age of 18 and 9.90% are 65 or older.
