Greene County, Pennsylvania

Greene County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 40,672. Its county seat is Waynesburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,497 km² (578 mi²). 1,491 km² (576 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 40,672 people, 15,060 households, and 10,587 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (71/mi²). There are 16,678 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.07% White, 3.90% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,060 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 106.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.50 males.
