Greene County, North Carolina

Greene County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 18,974. Its county seat is Snow Hill6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 689 km² (266 mi²). 687 km² (265 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,974 people, 6,696 households, and 4,955 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (72/mi²). There are 7,368 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 51.83% White, 41.21% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 5.75% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 7.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,696 households out of which 34.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% are married couples living together, 17.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 30.90% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 105.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,074, and the median income for a family is $36,419. Males have a median income of $27,048 versus $21,351 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,452. 20.20% of the population and 16.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.30% are under the age of 18 and 20.50% are 65 or older.
