Greene County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 240,391. Its county seat is Springfield6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,755 km² (678 mi²). 1,748 km² (675 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 240,391 people, 97,859 households, and 61,846 families residing in the county. The population density is 138/km² (356/mi²). There are 104,517 housing units at an average density of 60/km² (155/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.54% White, 2.26% African American, 0.66% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 97,859 households out of which 28.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.80% are non-families. 29.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 13.80% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,157, and the median income for a family is $42,613. Males have a median income of $30,672 versus $21,987 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,185. 12.10% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.60% are under the age of 18 and 7.50% are 65 or older.
