Gray County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 22,744. Its county seat is Pampa6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,407 km² (929 mi²). 2,404 km² (928 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,744 people, 8,793 households, and 6,049 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 10,567 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.15% White, 5.85% African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 8.23% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. 13.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,793 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 104.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,368, and the median income for a family is $40,019. Males have a median income of $32,401 versus $20,158 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,702. 13.80% of the population and 11.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 9.60% are 65 or older.
