Granville County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 48,498. Its county seat is Oxford6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,390 km² (537 mi²). 1,376 km² (531 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 48,498 people, 16,654 households, and 12,040 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (91/mi²). There are 17,896 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.74% White, 34.94% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.43% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 4.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,654 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 15.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 33.30% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 110.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,965, and the median income for a family is $46,013. Males have a median income of $30,418 versus $24,840 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,118. 11.70% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.20% are under the age of 18 and 14.10% are 65 or older.
