Grand Traverse County, Michigan

Grand Traverse County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 77,654. Its county seat is Traverse City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,557 km² (601 mi²). 1,205 km² (465 mi²) of it is land and 352 km² (136 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.63% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 77,654 people, 30,396 households, and 20,730 families residing in the county. The population density is 64/km² (167/mi²). There are 34,842 housing units at an average density of 29/km² (75/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.51% White, 0.40% African American, 0.93% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,396 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,169, and the median income for a family is $51,211. Males have a median income of $34,796 versus $24,139 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,111. 5.90% of the population and 3.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.30% are under the age of 18 and 5.90% are 65 or older.
