Grand Isle County, Vermont

Grand Isle County is a county located in the U.S. State of Vermont. As of 2000, the population is 6,901. Its county seat is North Hero6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 504 km² (195 mi²). 214 km² (83 mi²) of it is land and 290 km² (112 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 57.56% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,901 people, 2,761 households, and 1,954 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (84/mi²). There are 4,663 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (56/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.41% White, 0.14% African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,761 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.10% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 22.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 28.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,033, and the median income for a family is $48,878. Males have a median income of $35,539 versus $26,278 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,207. 7.60% of the population and 5.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.20% are under the age of 18 and 7.90% are 65 or older.
