This brings us to the topic of eliteism, which is very prevalent in the goth scene. Essentially, people who dress goth, but are not goth, are considered to be Posers.
There are similarities between goth fashion and black metal fashion for females, which can make it difficult to discern the subculture of the individual. This can be a problem, since goths tend to not like black metal, and metalheads tend to not associate with goths.
Most goths would agree that shopping at 'Hot Topic' for all of your clothing needs is a dead give away that you are a poser. Creativity is paramount, shop at vintage clothing stores, salvation armys, and ultra-expensive shops, for a mix & match wardrobe, if you don't want to be heckled in a goth club. It doesn't hurt to be fabulously thin & beautiful either.
