Göppingen is a town in southern Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, and capital of the district Göppingen. It is situated at the bottom of the Hohenstaufen mountain, in the valley of the river Fils[?].
The city was supposedly founded by an Alamannian leader called Geppo sometime in the 3rd or 4th century. A disastrous fire on August 25 1782 destroyed most of the town, but it was immediately rebuilt. The city developed into an industrial town during the 19th century.
