Glendive is a city located in Dawson County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,729. It is the county seat of Dawson County6.

Geography Glendive is located at 47°6'31" North, 104°42'38" West (47.108491, -104.710419)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,729 people, 1,983 households, and 1,229 families residing in the city. The population density is 548.3/km² (1,419.0/mi²). There are 2,204 housing units at an average density of 255.5/km² (661.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.38% White, 0.30% African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,983 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,943, and the median income for a family is $40,313. Males have a median income of $30,977 versus $20,132 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,544. 14.8% of the population and 11.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.8% are under the age of 18 and 10.3% are 65 or older.
