GIA

The Armed Islamic Group (GIA, from French Groupe Islamique Armé) is a guerrilla Islamist group operating in opposition to the government of Algeria. It was formed by some members of the Islamic Salvation Front[?] (FIS), a political party that won 1991 Algerian parliamentary elections, but had the results nullified by the Algerian government.
