Geneva County, Alabama

Geneva County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Geneva, Switzerland. As of 2000 the population was 25,764. Its county seat is Geneva.

History Geneva County was established on December 26, 1868.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,499 km² (579 mi²). 1,493 km² (576 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,764 people, 10,477 households, and 7,459 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (45/mi²). There are 12,115 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.11% White, 10.65% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,477 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,448, and the median income for a family is $32,563. Males have a median income of $26,018 versus $19,341 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,620. 19.60% of the population and 15.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.20% are under the age of 18 and 21.80% are 65 or older.
