Garfield County, Colorado

Garfield County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 43,791. The county seat is Glenwood Springs.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,655 km² (2,956 mi²). 7,633 km² (2,947 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 43,791 people, 16,229 households, and 11,279 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 17,336 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.96% White, 0.45% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 6.53% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 16.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,229 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 22.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 33.00% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 8.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 105.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $47,016, and the median income for a family is $53,840. Males have a median income of $37,554 versus $27,280 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,341. 7.50% of the population and 4.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.10% are under the age of 18 and 5.50% are 65 or older.
