Gallia County is a county located in the U.S. State of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 31,069. Its county seat is Gallipolis6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,220 km² (471 mi²). 1,214 km² (469 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 31,069 people, 12,060 households, and 8,586 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (66/mi²). There are 13,498 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.26% White, 2.70% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,060 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,191, and the median income for a family is $35,938. Males have a median income of $31,783 versus $22,829 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,183. 18.10% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.20% are under the age of 18 and 10.00% are 65 or older.
