Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 851 km² (328 mi²). 838 km² (324 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.43% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,445 people, 2,726 households, and 1,837 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (20/mi²). There are 3,071 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.37% White, 0.26% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,726 households out of which 28.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.60% are non-families. 29.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older.
