Gainesville is a city located in Ozark County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 632. It is the county seat of Ozark County6.

Geography Gainesville is located at 36°36'13" North, 92°25'51" West (36.603520, -92.430709)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 632 people, 294 households, and 176 families residing in the city. The population density is 92.4/km² (239.3/mi²). There are 339 housing units at an average density of 49.6/km² (128.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.73% White, 0.16% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 294 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 37.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,083, and the median income for a family is $32,019. Males have a median income of $22,188 versus $16,597 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,566. 18.4% of the population and 12.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.3% are under the age of 18 and 20.0% are 65 or older.
