Gainesville is a city located in Hall County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,578. The city is the county seat of Hall County6.

Geography Gainesville is located at 34°18'16" North, 83°50'2" West (34.304490, -83.833897)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 75.4 km² (29.1 mi²). 70.1 km² (27.1 mi²) of it is land and 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.94% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,578 people, 8,537 households, and 5,438 families residing in the city. The population density is 364.7/km² (944.4/mi²). There are 9,076 housing units at an average density of 129.4/km² (335.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 65.21% White, 15.73% African American, 0.30% Native American, 2.69% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 14.27% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 33.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,537 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 15.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 29.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.39.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 15.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $36,605, and the median income for a family is $43,734. Males have a median income of $24,729 versus $25,075 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,128. 21.8% of the population and 16.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.9% are under the age of 18 and 17.9% are 65 or older.
