Gaines County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 14,467. Its county seat is Seminole6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,892 km² (1,503 mi²). 3,891 km² (1,502 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,467 people, 4,681 households, and 3,754 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 5,410 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.28% White, 2.28% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 14.17% from other races, and 2.35% from two or more races. 35.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,681 households out of which 45.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.70% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.80% are non-families. 18.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.07 and the average family size is 3.53.

In the county, the population is spread out with 35.00% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 18.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,432, and the median income for a family is $34,046. Males have a median income of $29,580 versus $16,996 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,088. 21.70% of the population and 17.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.20% are under the age of 18 and 15.70% are 65 or older.
