Fulton County, Kentucky

Fulton County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 7,752. Its county seat is Hickman6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 597 km² (231 mi²). 541 km² (209 mi²) of it is land and 56 km² (22 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.37% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,752 people, 3,237 households, and 2,113 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 3,697 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.12% White, 23.19% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,237 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.40% are married couples living together, 18.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.70% are non-families. 32.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,382, and the median income for a family is $30,788. Males have a median income of $26,401 versus $19,549 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,309. 23.10% of the population and 20.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.30% are under the age of 18 and 16.00% are 65 or older.
