Front Line Assembly

Front Line Assembly is a Canada-based industrial music rock band.

History Created 1984 by Bill Leeb and Michael Balch[?]. Following the two (nowadays extremely rare) demo tapes Nerve War and Total Terror the first album The Initial Command was released in 1986. Soon Rhys Fulber[?] joined the band. The album State of Mind (1988) was the first one to be released worldwide. In 1989 Michael Balch left FLA to pursue his own musical ideas. Together with Al Jourgensen he switched to industrial rock with the band Ministry. The classic Caustic Grip was released in 1990, with the single "Mindphaser" that is considered the band's breakthrough.

With the release of Tactical Neural Implant in 1992 FLA became one of industrial music's most popular bands. The next album Millennium (1994) was the first one with a combination of metal guitars and electronic music - one of the characteristics of industrial music. Hard Wired (1995) and the world tour following the release was FLA's biggest success. Rhys Fulber left the band to concentrate on producing (Fear Factory and other bands). Replacing Fulber was Chris Peterson[?] who already supported the band on their live shows. Two years after Fulber quit, the album FLAvour of the Weak was released, making a complete turn in FLA's musical style: The metal influences were banned, instead drum & bass dominated the band's new sound. FLA made a slight return to their former sound with the album Implode (1999), followed by Epitaph (2001), which is said to be the very last FLA release (though it is also rumored that there may be an album released in 2003). Chris Petersen left FLA in 2002.
