Fremont, Sullivan County, New York

Fremont is a town located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,391.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 132.7 km² (51.2 mi²). 130.4 km² (50.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.74% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,391 people, 563 households, and 394 families residing in the town. The population density is 10.7/km² (27.6/mi²). There are 1,182 housing units at an average density of 9.1/km² (23.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.75% White, 1.58% African American, 0.43% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 563 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 27.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,125, and the median income for a family is $40,938. Males have a median income of $29,338 versus $27,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,087. 15.7% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.8% are under the age of 18 and 16.5% are 65 or older.
