Franklin County, Illinois

Franklin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 39,018. Its county seat is Benton, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,117 km² (431 mi²). 1,067 km² (412 mi²) of it is land and 50 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.48% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,018 people, 16,408 households, and 10,976 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (95/mi²). There are 18,105 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.63% White, 0.15% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,408 households out of which 28.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.10% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,411, and the median income for a family is $36,294. Males have a median income of $31,429 versus $19,664 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,407. 16.20% of the population and 12.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.10% are under the age of 18 and 9.60% are 65 or older.
