Franklin County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 20,285. The county's county seat is Carnesville, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 690 km² (266 mi²). 682 km² (263 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,285 people, 7,888 households, and 5,695 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (77/mi²). There are 9,303 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.49% White, 8.83% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,888 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,134, and the median income for a family is $38,463. Males have a median income of $29,474 versus $21,051 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,767. 13.90% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.80% are under the age of 18 and 18.50% are 65 or older.
