Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,031 km² (398 mi²). 1,025 km² (396 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 17,954 people, 7,041 households, and 5,041 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (45/mi²). There are 7,692 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.71% White, 0.11% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,041 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.00.
