Fort Yukon, Alaska

Fort Yukon is a city located in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 595.

Geography Fort Yukon is located at 66°34'3" North, 145°15'23" West (66.567586, -145.256327)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²). 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.65% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 595 people, 225 households, and 137 families residing in the city. The population density is 32.8/km² (85.0/mi²). There are 317 housing units at an average density of 17.5/km² (45.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 10.76% White, 0.17% African American, 86.05% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 2.69% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 225 households out of which 36.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 25.8% are married couples living together, 23.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.37.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.4% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 112.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,375, and the median income for a family is $32,083. Males have a median income of $25,000 versus $27,813 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,360. 18.5% of the population and 18.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.3% are under the age of 18 and 3.5% are 65 or older.
