Fort Pierre is a city located in Stanley County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,991. It is the county seat of Stanley County6.

Geography Fort Pierre is located at 44°21'32" North, 100°22'33" West (44.358941, -100.375742)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.69% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,991 people, 810 households, and 538 families residing in the city. The population density is 265.1/km² (686.6/mi²). There are 875 housing units at an average density of 116.5/km² (301.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.16% White, 0.20% African American, 5.22% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.96% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 810 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $41,181, and the median income for a family is $47,885. Males have a median income of $29,948 versus $21,208 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,478. 8.9% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.2% are under the age of 18 and 14.8% are 65 or older.
