Fort Deposit is a town located in Lowndes County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,270.

Geography Fort Deposit is located at 31°59'16" North, 86°34'16" West (31.987872, -86.571249)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.6 km² (5.6 mi²). 14.6 km² (5.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,270 people, 489 households, and 349 families residing in the town. The population density is 86.9/km² (225.1/mi²). There are 569 housing units at an average density of 39.0/km² (100.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 31.50% White, 68.19% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 489 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.3% are married couples living together, 27.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $20,433, and the median income for a family is $24,250. Males have a median income of $27,391 versus $20,882 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,584. 35.3% of the population and 29.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 42.8% are under the age of 18 and 34.2% are 65 or older.
