Floyd County, Indiana

Floyd County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 70,823. The county's county seat is New Albany, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 384 km² (148 mi²). 383 km² (148 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 70,823 people, 27,511 households, and 19,697 families residing in the county. The population density is 185/km² (478/mi²). There are 29,087 housing units at an average density of 76/km² (196/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.23% White, 4.41% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,511 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,022, and the median income for a family is $52,401. Males have a median income of $37,613 versus $26,539 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,852. 8.70% of the population and 6.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.50% are under the age of 18 and 7.40% are 65 or older.
