Florence County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 125,761. Its county seat is Florence6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,082 km² (804 mi²). 2,072 km² (800 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 125,761 people, 47,147 households, and 33,804 families residing in the county. The population density is 61/km² (157/mi²). There are 51,836 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (65/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.65% White, 39.34% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 47,147 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 18.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,144, and the median income for a family is $41,274. Males have a median income of $32,065 versus $21,906 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,876. 16.40% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.30% are under the age of 18 and 16.50% are 65 or older.
