Flathead County, Montana

Flathead County is a county located in the U.S. State of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 74,471. Its county seat is Kalispell6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 13,614 km² (5,256 mi²). 13,205 km² (5,098 mi²) of it is land and 410 km² (158 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.01% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 74,471 people, 29,588 households, and 20,415 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 34,773 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.26% White, 0.15% African American, 1.15% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 29,588 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,466, and the median income for a family is $40,702. Males have a median income of $31,908 versus $20,619 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,112. 13.00% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.70% are under the age of 18 and 8.60% are 65 or older.
