FIPS place code

FIPS place codes are a U.S. Federal Information Processing Standard for assigning numeric codes to human settlements in the United States. They are used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and are also used in this encyclopedia.

See Paris (disambiguation) for an example of the use of FIPS codes.

Please note that FIPS codes are not the same thing as zip codes.
