Ferndale, Michigan

Ferndale is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan along I-696 and I-75. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,105.

It is largely made up of residential areas with most of its business establishments along Nine-Mile Road and Woodward Avenue. It has a classic midwestern downtown with many small privately-owned shops, broad sidewalks, slow traffic, and lots of trees and benches. The downtown also features several resturants, dance clubs, and has mostly escaped the abandonment that many other small downtowns suffered.

Some notable Ferndale features:

  • It is the starting point of the Woodward Dream Cruise[?], the largest automobile-related gathering in the country. (The endpoint is Pontiac, Michigan).
  • Ferndale is a focal point of the Michgan gay, lesbian and transgendered communties and is the host of the annual Detroit Metropolitan Gay Pride Festival.
  • Ferndale is adjacent to the Detroit Zoo[?] and the Michigan State Fairgrounds.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,105 people, 9,872 households, and 5,103 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,199.7/km² (5,697.9/mi²). There are 10,243 housing units at an average density of 1,019.3/km² (2,640.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.46% White, 3.42% African American, 0.55% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 2.58% from two or more races. 1.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,872 households out of which 23.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.3% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 41.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $45,629, and the median income for a family is $51,687. Males have a median income of $40,392 versus $30,859 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,133. 8.2% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.0% are under the age of 18 and 9.6% are 65 or older.
