Fernandina Beach is a city located in Nassau County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,549. It is the county seat of Nassau County6.

Geography Fernandina Beach is located at 30°39'48" North, 81°27'6" West (30.663433, -81.451731)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.8 km² (10.7 mi²). 27.8 km² (10.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 10,549 people, 4,525 households, and 2,941 families residing in the city. The population density is 379.9/km² (984.4/mi²). There are 5,588 housing units at an average density of 201.3/km² (521.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 81.54% White, 16.19% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 2.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,525 households out of which 23.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 28.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $40,893, and the median income for a family is $54,806. Males have a median income of $36,179 versus $26,356 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,517. 10.2% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.1% are under the age of 18 and 8.7% are 65 or older.
