The Falls of Saint Anthony, adjacent to the downtown area of Minneapolis, Minnesota constituted the highest waterfall on the Mississippi River until it was replaced by a series of dams during the 19th century. They became known to the world beyond the indigenous people who lived in their vicinity in the 17th century when they were observed by Father Louis Hennepin[?], who also "discovered" Niagara Falls.
