Fairfield is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 12,381.

Geography Fairfield is located at 33°28'37" North, 86°55'1" West (33.476908, -86.916842)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,381 people, 4,600 households, and 3,141 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,354.2/km² (3,503.8/mi²). There are 4,960 housing units at an average density of 542.5/km² (1,403.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 8.90% White, 90.23% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,600 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.6% are married couples living together, 28.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 79.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,845, and the median income for a family is $38,552. Males have a median income of $30,833 versus $25,143 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,607. 21.5% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.7% are under the age of 18 and 25.3% are 65 or older.
